In the Mid 1850s, Ann Jarvis worked to reform the unhealthy surroundings of ALL the soldiers during the Civil War in what she called Mother’s Work Days. Shoes were hard to come by and the human sanitation was deplorable! Julia Ward Howe in the Mid 1870s wrote the Mother’s Day Proclamation after the war promoting disarmament and to unite the Nation in Peace.
Ann passed on in 1905 and her Daughter, Anna carried on her effort. Anna gave white carnations to about 500 Mothers at her Mom’s Church in 1907. That Church, the St. Andrew’s Methodist Episcopal Church in Gafton West Virginia, has become a National Historic Landmark and Shrine / Museum. CLICK the LINK for more information. The First actual Mother’s Day was observed on May 10th 1908.
